Morning Mountain View

In the early morning, I was out on the quiet open roads by the airport looking up at the scenery. It was a gorgeous morning — sunny and bright. As I looked at the mountain peaks, I thought to myself, “I’m going up there today.”

My route was a highlight reel of all the best cycling routes in Vancouver — from my house in Steveston, out around the point at UBC, through Stanley Park, Marine Drive to Horseshoe Bay, up to the first lookout at Cypress. From the lookout, we enjoyed the view of the city, UBC, and the airport. We could see a long way out. We could even see as far out as the Steveston jetty. “Man, oh, man…I’ve got a long way home. I think I need to sit down. Did I mention this cookie tastes terrific?”

As I hit downtown Vancouver, I started to get serious about getting home. In fact, I made it from the bottom of Cypress to Arthur Liang bridge in 1hr. Continue reading

Science Scouts

Science Scouts BadgeToday, the Science Scouts were on Boing Boing again. How cool is that! If you didn’t know this already, my alter ego is a scientist. Don’t worry, this doesn’t change anything between us – the only place I use my Dr. moniker is on my Safeway club card.

Science Scouts Cloner Badge

In between my training sessions, I’m currently in the process of getting myself a brand new Science Outreach faculty position at UBC. Basically, I will get to talk Science with high school kids, teach up a storm, and do fun things all day. The Science Scouts are a group of like minded crazy scientists in Vancouver who’ve got TV shows, write science columns, talk on the radio, do experiments with diapers in centrifuges – that kind of thing. I fit right in. Our website has become a bit of a web phenom. It’s been fun to watch. Continue reading

Enough Already

I’ve had enough of this cold. I did the warm-up of my swim workout and then called it quits. How lame is that. I also skipped the bike TT workout. Lame.

Penney’s Program
jog half the neighbourhood route
walk the dyke, plus three strides*

*Note strides work, she actually runs and thinks it’s a game. Next time, try the neighbourhood loop with only 30 sec max run segments – so that she actually runs. Penney, we’ll have you running with Harcus by sometime next year….

Penney’s Program

Today, I started my dog Penney on a training program. She’s a wonderful black lab with all kinds of funny habits. She doesn’t know a thing about running. Since this cold has me seriously slowed down, I thought it would be the perfect time to take Penney for a run. She doesn’t run, she walks fast. A racewalker, that’s what she is.

Penney’s Program
15 min jog with Penney ’round the neighbourhood loop
10 min cooldown walk ’round the block

No actual training for me – still sick

Crystal and Roger

I’m sorry for the lack of posts, but I’m sick. I have a cold. I hate being sick.

At least it’s sunny. I’ve been sitting on my couch with my feet up watching the two chickadees in our back yard. We named them Roger and Crystal. I think they must have eggs in the nest, because Crystal was in the house for a good while this morning.

Long Shopping Ride

Today’s long ride was different. I took the commuter bike out with a list of errands. I went all over town. I think it took me almost 5hr to get the 3hr ride plus all the shopping done. New bike shorts, knee warmers, new bike tools, and another Starbuck’s mid-ride surprise from a good friend, made for a good day. I didn’t swim today, too tired, still sick.

Racing with a Cold

The Delta triathlon race was today. I was really looking forward to the swim because it’s a crowded choppy swim. Crazy, I know! But last year, I got kind of freaked out, and now, with my new swimming skills, I really wanted another try. But I’m sick. I feel terrible. Sick, darn it, I probably shouldn’t race with a cold.

So congested, I can’t sleep. Hmmmm. What the heck, I’m up already. I may as well get my stuff ready for racing in Delta. If I feel like crap, I can just drop out. I’ll take a couple of these Advil Cold and Sinus…

And that’s how the morning went. I packed my stuff and got myself to Delta with lots of time to spare. Getting ready for the race, my cold made me slower physically and mentally. I lost my number. I wasn’t nervous at all. I did a full warm-up. I helped Continue reading
