First Swim at Sasamat

It’s still May – and we’re already swimming in Sasamat Lake. After running in the morning in the Terra Nova rural Park, I enjoyed swimming the loop in the lake this afternoon. For my run, I found a new route which runs through the Richmond Sharing Farm - a cooperative garden who’s harvest gets donated to local food banks. For the swim, I stayed side by side with Stan until the dock and then picked up the pace a bit for the rest of the loop. The water was cold for the first 5-6 head dunks, but after that, no problems.

After the swim, we went back to Drew’s cabin for a beer. Beautiful view, relaxing atmosphere, an all round good way to spend the afternoon. Later in the afternoon, Torbin and I headed out to watch the final’s of the BC JR’s Ultimate Champs. Left on the agenda, dinner, then T’s hockey game. It’s been a busy Sunday – a pattern which I expect will repeat a few times more throughout the summer.

Feel the Burn

Tonight’s workout, a 48km bike time trial (TT) followed by a 20 min brick run, was a quality session.

After a warm-up about 20 riders from our club gathered at the TT start. A rider was sent off every 5 seconds with the faster riders heading out last. As we waited, my thoughts wandered to Landis missing his start out of the gate at the 2006 Tour, and I started to feel a bit of excited nerves. It’s only a club workout, but I guess with everyone crowded around the start my competitive racing mindset emerged.

Out of the start gate, I went hard. “Forget pacing, just GivR!” was what I was thinking. On the second loop, Continue reading

First Day at Kits Pool

Kit's PoolOn Sunday, I headed to Kits pool with my wet suit. I swam for 50 minutes. For about 20min, Andrew let me draft off his toes. It was a good swim. I am a whole new swimmer. My wet suit is so fast. I glide along like a streamlined fish. After the swim, Bronwyn and I went for a 2h15 min run from Kits pool, around Prospect Point, and back. The rain was ridiculous, and at times, even laughable. At the end of it all, we both felt very strong for conquering the elements and the big weekend of training.

Today (Tuesday), I find myself with general aches all over – but nothing in particular hurts. There’s a few new aches in my shoulders from the wetsuit swim. I’ve also got to be a bit careful because it’s easy to be grumpy from fatigue. But really, I’m feeling pretty great.

Busy Morning

An early start this morning, as I had a bunch of things to get done before heading out. First, I baked the quiche that we’re having for dinner tonight (swiss cheese, red onion & mushrooms + chives & thyme from the garden). Next, I packed all my workout gear. Since, I haven’t unpacked anything from the weekend of racing yet, this was a bit of a chore that included assembling and cleaning my bike. I made it to the bus stop with only a few minutes to spare. Thanks to Torb, for making sure that I had a coffee in hand, and a yummy wrap for lunch.

OK, I’ve just written two posts that seem to be all about food. I think I must be hungry – time for a snack…

Sunny Swim

It was a beautiful sunny day for my swim at the UBC outdoor pool. I’ve definitely got a head start on my tan lines this year.

Vancouver Marathon

It was a misty wet morning in Vancouver for the marathon. After a tough swim workout, I jetted down to the course in my car. My plan was do my Sunday run backwards and cheer for folks along the course. In particular, I was looking for my Mum (doing her first half marathon) and my friend June (trying to qualify for Boston). After ditching my car, I ran over the Burrard Street bridge looking out for June. She was looking good coming up to the bridge on her way out to UBC. I could see it was a good day because she was running just a couple of minutes behind the 3:45 pace bunny.

I then ran briskly out to Stanley Park to see if I could catch my Mum. She was racewalking up a storm and so she was probably heading home under the bridge just as I headed out to the Park. You can see from the happy finish line picture that Mum and the racewalkers had a fantastic time. She was “over the moon” when Continue reading

IronMan Day

I’ve decided to nickname Wednesdays, “Ironman day”. A morning swim, a full work day, followed by the LETC club T2 brick workout, plus a short run, then the bike home — when I saw that line up in the schedule I thought my coach had leaped off the deep end. But then I started to think about the fact that IronMan will take me ALL DAY. All day. A very long time. Wednesday’s are my chance to feel what it’s like to just keep going and to practice getting it right. Continue reading

Enough Already

I’ve had enough of this cold. I did the warm-up of my swim workout and then called it quits. How lame is that. I also skipped the bike TT workout. Lame.

Penney’s Program
jog half the neighbourhood route
walk the dyke, plus three strides*

*Note strides work, she actually runs and thinks it’s a game. Next time, try the neighbourhood loop with only 30 sec max run segments – so that she actually runs. Penney, we’ll have you running with Harcus by sometime next year….

Racing with a Cold

The Delta triathlon race was today. I was really looking forward to the swim because it’s a crowded choppy swim. Crazy, I know! But last year, I got kind of freaked out, and now, with my new swimming skills, I really wanted another try. But I’m sick. I feel terrible. Sick, darn it, I probably shouldn’t race with a cold.

So congested, I can’t sleep. Hmmmm. What the heck, I’m up already. I may as well get my stuff ready for racing in Delta. If I feel like crap, I can just drop out. I’ll take a couple of these Advil Cold and Sinus…

And that’s how the morning went. I packed my stuff and got myself to Delta with lots of time to spare. Getting ready for the race, my cold made me slower physically and mentally. I lost my number. I wasn’t nervous at all. I did a full warm-up. I helped Continue reading
