Ants in my pants

Ants in my pants and a bee in my bonnet. That summarizes my day today. I’m all wound up with stress eating me from the inside out. Not exactly the kind of mental pre-workout preparation that “I’m known for”. The track workout was a good break from it all.

Comfort Zone

I had troubles in the pool today. Basically, I got outside of my comfort zone with our crowded lane – and then I got super negative in my head.

Next time, I get out of my comfort zone I will be a little bit better. I will be strong and confident and in a totally different space by the time the end of summer. It will be summer and outside and I will be loving every minute. Even if I step outside my comfort zone in the pool, I will just keep swimming. I will have a plan, and I will be adaptable. There are so many good swims ahead to enjoy.

It’s all learning. I don’t need to be upset about a stupid workout. I had bad workouts last year and I got through them fine.

Improving is Fun

It was a time trial in the pool today. I knew it and I was looking forward to it. I’m amazed at my major shift in attitude. The pool no longer intimidates the H – E – double hockey sticks out of me. During the run, I was talking to Madeline about how freaky your first time trial can be. I know, I know, don’t worry girl, it all gets better from now on.

Hardest Workouts of the Summer

Tuesday bike workout

  • 3 x [3km bike loop, 1.5km run (with very big hill)]

Wednesday time trial

  • mile TT 6:26
  • 4 x 400m @ 1:27

The bike/run workout on Tuesday was a tough one. There was lots of people out, so the competitive juices were flowing, and the intensity was high. The hill was mentally very challenging. I really need to do more hill work. My body felt heavy at Wednesdays time trial.

32km Time Trial

  • warmup 15:00, Avg HR 135, Max 164

  • time trial (includes warmdown)

  • Avg HR 156, Max HR 232 (?)
  • 809kCal, 38.2km, Avg Speed 29.9km/h
  • Avg Cadence 92, Max 116

I felt good today. Probably because I had 11hr of sleep. It could also be because I took the day off to attend this talk. It could also be because I planted my garden this afternoon in the gorgeous 30oC weather. Paradise.

Swim, bonk, run /work all afternoon, then bonk again

I had a complete bonk after the swim workout today (tears and all) triggered by having to swim too long on the time trial. I immediately ate a powergel and a bannana and drank a bunch of water. It took about a half hour til I was feeling myself again. I had another complete bonk on the drive home in the afternoon after working all afternoon. I drank a bunch of water and immediately went to sleep for a couple of hours (5-7pm). Woke up, drank some water, and took some advil for my terrible headache. I woke up several times in the night to pee/drink water. I guess I was really tired from the long ride yesterday. It’s been a good hard weekend of training.

swim workout

  • 200m warmup
  • 1500m time trial (I counted but wasn’t sure so followed Chung not knowing that he totally lost track. So we swam about 1750m in total until we finally stopped. I looked at my watch when I thought it was 1500m and it was approximately 31 minutes. Oh well.)

run workout

  • 1h:50 min run (felt quite good after the food kicked in)

Surprise Time Trial

Check out how much faster my swimming times are getting. I’m more than 10 seconds faster on the 100m and maybe a minute faster on the 400m if you compare to the last time trial. For the 100m, I was 1:33 vs. 1:47, and for the 500m I was 9:35 vs. 400m @ 8:19. I bet I could have gone faster for the 500m, but I put it all out there for the 100m and didn’t feel quite recovered on the 500m. I also had trouble keeping track of how much I had already swum. I guess my ability to count lengths will get better as the swimming gets easier (i.e., less fatigue = better ability to count).
